Hey everyone! Yesterday, HBO Max sent out the first official trailer for season 3 of DC’s Doom Patrol introducing new insane and wacky adventures for the team. In yesterday’s post, I said that we would do a breakdown of the trailer and gather some background for all of you! So, after an extensive search through Doom Patrol comics and a tiring time screenshotting the various frames, here we go!
Be warned, it was a long trailer and there is A LOT to talk about…
Let’s get started!

The trailer starts out with a few quick shots. This first one features the team in a kind of graveyard of sort. Larry is in a tuxedo, Rita is leading the charge, Jane isn’t the regular pissed-off Jane, and Brendan Fraser has join the team in person for the first time! There also appears to be a kind of soldier or officer with military rank joining them. Hard to tell who it could be right now.

Cliff is meeting himself? Possible dreamscape. Definitely not the strangest thing we’ve seen on Doom Patrol.

I can already read the title “Zombie Patrol” before the season is out. Not sure how Cliff would be turned into a zombie. Perhaps he’s trying to blend in with them?

A nice shot of Larry becoming one with the Negative energy inside him.

Joivan Wade’s Cyborg out in some clearing. Great to see him back!

Another quick shot of Jane changing personalities. The transition looks really clean and, honestly, Diane Guerrero has done a spectacular job as Crazy Jane. She’s brought so much to the role and switches to her alters perfectly on the screen.

The Doom Patrol Bus! A medium sized explosion destroying the team’s mode of transport. However, we already know that Danny will be returning in the form of an ambulance this season. So, perhaps Danny will join the Doom Patrol full time after this?
The last quick shot is our introduction to the evil Madame Rouge. As a quick background, she’s one of the oldest enemies of the Doom Patrol, the only female member of the Brotherhood of Evil, successfully killed the Doom Patrol and the Brotherhood of Evil, and was then brutally murdered by Beast Boy a.k.a. Gar Logan in a New Teen Titans crossover. In the comics, she has a bit of a bipolar disorder as well. We’ll see if they explore that. She is strong, a master of disguise, had surgery performed by the Brain to stretch her limbs, and is incredibly manipulative. Do not trust her this season!

Here we see a kind of drill machine that is coming out of the Earth. Inside is Madame Rouge who claims it is a time machine. Where she is coming from or how the machine works is still to be determined…

Seems to be a random pedestrian stumbling upon Rouge’s time machine. Appears present day from the attire.

Similar medium shot of Madame Rouge coming into present day. The question is… why?

The team are back after that cliffhanger from season 2 and seem to be working together despite Chief’s disappearance. Jane, however, is different. Spoilers: at the end of the second season, a certain personality took over the Underground and called Jane “Sweet Baby Kay.” Only one person calls Jane that. Has her father taken over the Underground? Definitely going to make for an interesting season!

A close-up of Madame Rouge meeting the team. It’s strange that she is working with them, isn’t it? Is this a con or has her memory been corrupted by her trip through time? Still, it’s interesting how she’s sort of taking over Chief’s role in this season.

They’ve brought the time machine into Doom Manor. A nice motorcycle in the corner. Not much else it seems.

I love how they can travel into alternate realities in a donkey’s ass and, yet, time travel crosses the line. To Cliff, that is impossible.

A nice shot of the time machine. Someone from Doom Manor is getting in. Where are they off to?
So, I guess it’s Rita who is using the time machine! Is she going back to save the Chief or someone else? Maybe she’s going to stop her accident from ever happening? Sounds like something she would do.

Hard to not get a blurry shot. Reminds me of Wizard of Oz with the dog drifting through this time stream or something like that. Not to mention, that dog is wearing a bow tie…
That about sums up Doom Patrol.
So, she was sent here to stop something terrible from happening. Was it the Brotherhood of Evil or the Sisterhood of Dada? Something worse? Still, Rouge appears to be filling out the Chief’s role of giving the team absurd assignments.

Some more Robotman and Crazy Jane! (Except it’s not really Jane)

If you asked me if we would ever see the Brotherhood of Evil in live action ten years ago, I would have laughed it off. So excited to see these odd teams duke it out this season.
It seems that Rita has come up with a ‘Master Plan’ to defeat the Brotherhood.
Call Time: 9:30 am
Location: Brotherhood of Evil Lair (TBD)
Catering provided by Larry
Important: Pack a change of clothes?
Sounds like they have everything under control…

They look great! Now, the only issue Mallah and Brain appear in Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol run is when the Brain is looking to take over Cliff’s new body made by Will Magnus of the Metal Men. Could they still want his current body? We’ll see what the evil plan is soon, hopefully.

Also, “She Must Be Eliminated”
Are they talking about Madame Rouge? Rita went in the time machine, perhaps she crossed paths with them?
Big alien gun. Appears that these are goons of Garguax, an intergalactic arms dealer who has had run ins with the Doom Patrol in the past.

This show is so weird. I suppose that device on his head allows him to blend in with the crowd. Or perhaps their the Plastic Men Garguax created as his personal army?
A dance sequence?!

Wait! Is the gun making them dance? Seems like the same room and the same big alien gun from earlier.

Has Larry dealt with them in the past or maybe he heard stories from the Chief about the Brotherhood of Evil?

The Sisterhood of Dada is this show’s take on the Brotherhood of Dada from Morrison’s run. In this image, many speculate the woman to be The Quiz who is a germaphobe who has every power that you haven’t thought of. In this case, the ability to turn people into clowns.
Here, dancing on the table, we have Frenzy who has bicycle parts growing out of his back and, like in the comics, has the ability to turn his hatred into a bitter tornado of sorts. He had an issue in the comics where Morrison had him write a letter to his mother about how his life in the Painting that Ate Paris is so much better than the real world since he can be who he wants to be. It’s written in colloquial language that is hard to read, but the point of the letter makes him feel more like a hero than the villain seen by the Doom Patrol at the time. Definitely interested to see how he is portrayed in the show!

Here is Sleepwalk who is ripped straight from the comics. Her look is perfect and I love how they kept the soundproof headphones that no doubt play white noise to help her sleep like in the comics. Basically, when she’s asleep she becomes stronger like a basic superhuman.

Lastly, here is The Fog who has been gender flipped for the show to accommodate the Sisterhood of Dada. Basically, she is able to turn into this cloud of gas that absorbs the thoughts of anyone she comes in contact with. In the comics, she tried this on Crazy Jane and all of the alters literally drove The Fog insane and foretold the Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse.
Crazy stuff.

How can the team trust her? She is such a villain! Come on…

Thank you, Vic!

Cliff might be talking to Jane or maybe his daughter.

Great shot! Jane working a jigsaw puzzle in the Underground. After being taken over by another personality, she must be struggling to not be in control right now.

In this shot, Vic has gone to see his father for help. Probably something with his cybernetics acting up.

Cyborg has shifted from Red to Blue in color here. Maybe a bit of code corrupted his system. Or, perhaps Grid has taken control of him?

Oh no, Cliff! Without Chief, it seems that the technical repairs are being made by Cyborg in this scene.

His hands are shaking and he’s losing control of his body. That’s not good! Yet, maybe we’ll see a new Robotman suit in the future of this season…
Some drugs and blood being pumped into his system. Cliff must be really messed up if this is happening right now.
Really reminds me of the Brain and Mallah issue in Grant Morrison’s run…

As we saw earlier, the team is zombified. Although, not sure how Cliff got infected with the zombie virus since he is practically all robot. Maybe he’s pretending to fit in with the group? We’ll see soon enough.

Willoughby Kipling is back in some kind of cabin. Some strange line of light behind him. Not sure what that is.

An infected Larry and Cyborg with blue light in the background.

Baphomet returns. Probably summoned by Kipling again.

More dancing! Cyborg with blue light again.
Snapped out of their dancing routine and Jane with a different alter out right now.

The quiz and the Sisterhood of Dada being attacked by a troop of soldiers. Also, there is Madame Rouge in the background.

Okay, they look to be Nazis? Time travel is wack, bro.

Rita, Jane, Cyborg, someone with a backpack, and Robotman on the run. Again, unsure of what is going on here.

The group is running towards a strange boat and the scene is very foggy. Reminds me almost of the Underground, but I can’t tell.

You might not have caught it, but there is a split second shot where Little Kay is running for her room. Probably running away from her abusive father.

Jane and others still learning to trust the manipulative Madame Rouge.

Looks like Sleepwalk operating some kind of Dr. Seuss machine that will no doubt do something ridiculous for the Sisterhood of Dada.

Looks like Jane might be in that same house Little Kay was running through earlier. Either this is a dream-like place or she has decided to return to her childhood home. Considering the smoke coming in, I’m willing to bet its a mirage from the Underground.

Cliff with his hands up and that fog behind him might be The Fog.

Looks like Vic is being operated on. I don’t think it is a flashback to when he was first created since his father is not in the room but it might have something to do with Grid.

Rita is in her beekeeper outfit I think. She’s still having trouble with her appearance. Also, there is a donkey costume in the background. Callback to the first season?

Cool shot here. Corrupted looking alter of Jane approaching a noose. Is the Underground going to kill one of their alters?

I believe this is Jane in the Underground again. A few odd and forgotten alters in the background.

I remember months ago when Matt Bomer confirmed in an interview that Larry would get some closure and feel more connected with the Negative Spirit in this next season. Can’t wait to see how it all plays out!

I really like this shot with Larry and the Negative Spirit mirrored in this celestial background. It also looks like the Larry on the left is present day without the bandages. Hard to get a close up look at his wounded face, but the parallels here are still amazing.

Same shot from earlier where Cliff meets Robot Man. Might be dream sequence or the Underground or something wacky. Who knows what will happen, especially in Doom Patrol?

Cliff flipping of their pursuers. Same scene from earlier and I presume they are on the boat now. Maybe the kid on the right is from Dead Boy Detectives who are supposedly going to get a spinoff from HBO Max. Basically, they are another Vertigo comic created by Neil Gaiman, Matt Wagner, and Malcolm Jones III, who follow these two wandering spirits who solve supernatural mysteries.

Appears that this is after the bus explosion as you can see in the background. Larry is in his tropical shirt, Vic is kneeling over a female’s body, and the team seems to be in disarray from their expressions. Who blew up the Doom Patrol’s bus?
Rita and Madame Rouge arguing over the team. Definitely seems that Rita is trying to take a more active role as a superhero after last season. That, and there is also a couple of bottles in front of her and the big table is also prepared. Setting up an event?
The team is working together to KICK SOME ASS! Last we saw the asses, the group was in the Men from N.O.W.H.E.R.E.’s secret base. Now, they are widespread and taking on the Doom Patrol.

Vic in surgery with action figures around him.

Rita in the time machine.

Larry fading into the Negative Man.

I don’t know what the fuck is going on here… Robot Man returns.

Walls of fire stand in front of Madame Rouge and the fiery words spell “Piffle Paffle” with a bee or bird in the middle.

Jane and The Fog in a kind of Sweets Shoppe. Perhaps this is after she’s absorbed the thoughts of Crazy Jane? They seem to be working together here. And that IS Crazy Jane and not any of the other alters.

Title Card!
This is hella Grant Morrison right here. Is that the Bicycle of Albert Hofmann? Basically, a man who took too much LSD, like 250 micrograms, and didn’t experience the affects until his bike ride home. The story is super significant since it helped power up Mr. Nobody’s next attack on reality by forcing others’ hallucination.
Please bring back Alan Tudyk’s Mr. Nobody!!!
Anyways, that was the trailer breakdown! If you have any questions, leave it down below. Otherwise, get ready for another strange and funny season!
Until next time…
