A few weeks ago Warner Bros. dropped a very short teaser for ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’. We wanted to talk about the film a little bit and do a quick trailer shot by shot. Below is the official synopsis that was provided.
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.”
Now let’s do a little backstory on what we know. The title of the movie refers to a textbook that is required reading for first year students at Hogwarts. It was briefly mentioned in book one of Harry Potter. The book then went into print for us Harry Potter fans and it provided an entertaining journey from Newt Scamander’s point of view as he wrangled up these creatures.
Watch the trailer below and then we’ll go over a few shots:
Our first glimpses are of a small light being conjured by using the ‘Lumos Maxima’ charm. The voice is definitely Eddie Redmayne, who plays Scamander. We love how it explodes into a mass of blue and white colors before revealing the Warner Bros. logo.
Here we see Katherine Waterstone’s character, Tina Goldstein, in a large official looking hall addressing what looks to be witches and wizards. She seems to be explaining the situation of a lost case.
This is Seraphina and you might notice the seal behind her. It is the official seal of the Magical Congress of the United States of America. We love that it is taking place in America because the whole magical aspect of the wizarding world of Harry Potter never really mentioned much about the witches and wizards of America. You can also notice that the clothes seem a little out of date. This is because the movie takes place several decades before Harry Potter even enters Hogwarts.
A quick shot of the case full of magical creatures we think she is talking about that has gone missing.
Here we see a man surveying a destroyed apartment. It looks to be Colin Farrell. He is playing Percival Graves, a high-ranking auror, confidante to the President of the American magical community. He has been set with the task of tracking down Newt.
Our first glimpse of Newt holding the infamous case.
Something or several somethings in this case are roaring. Newt quickly slams the case shut as Tina asks if it was open. A frazzled looking Newt replies, “Just a smidge.”
Now we’re curious about this. Why was Tina reporting the theft of the case to the official wizarding community, but she seems to be helping Newt here with said case?
Our last shot is of Newt into action with his wand drawn. Is it a creature he is trying to apprehend or someone trying to steal the case or maybe steal back the case?
Here is the official movie poster. If you look closely Newt seems to be standing on the seal of the American Magical Congress and we are just speculating that this is the lobby of the wizarding government building.
We think the movie has a lot of promise. The short teaser is suspenseful and layered with the great Harry Potter magic we have all grown to love from the franchise. It is foolish to expect it to be on par as far as box office tallies with the previous record breaking Harry Potter films, but we also believe that this movie may prove to be a pleasant surprise.
Harry Potter has a vast fan following and this may quench their mournful thirst for anything relating to the sadly missed wizarding world.
The movie is being released November 18, 2016 and we are sure the Thanksgiving weekend will give it a nice push. Since this is being brought to us by Warner Bros, we wouldn’t be surprised if the first full length trailer drops in front of Batman v. Superman. We also think a second full length trailer will probably be released during Suicide Squad in August.
