Welcome to our late edition of the ever popular Tuesday Top Five. Today we are going to rank our favorite Superman stories.
These are our opinions and if you have your own favorite that we forgot to add, give us a shout in the comments.
5. Superman: Birthright
Our number five spot we have Superman Birthright. This story makes the list because it gives us a great feel for the good old Superman in a newer fashion. We see more of Clark Kent and some of his classical villains brought back in a new updated light.
4. Superman: Red Son
Any story where Superman has his morals challenged or his powers weakened makes a great Superman story. Basically the story recreates the origin of Superman as he lands in Russia instead of Kansas. It gives us a very different take on Superman who is a bit more tough and fights for different causes that we wouldn’t have believed he would ever be involved in.
Plus we get a drunken Russian Batman. What’s better than that?
3. Death and Return of Superman
Possibly one of the Greatest Superman stories ever told. THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN!
But why is it only at number three? There is a simple reason and it’s because there are a few more stories that do shine more brightly. The origin of this story is quite amazing. The writers created a storyboard that kept all of their ideas, at the end of the list they had a sticky note that someone wrote the Death of Superman. It was just a joke until they ran out of ideas. They ended up actually writing the story and it was a hit. The fact that they were willing to kill the first Superhero excited fans to no end and the story still holds up today because it is so iconic that you can never forget it.
2. Kingdom Come
Another great story that depicts government involvement with all superhero actions. Does that sound familiar? It should because it is similar to the premise around Civil War, but it is entirely different because it doesn’t have a happy ending. The story depicts the destruction that would happen if a super-being civil war actually did happen and how it ends the world as we know it.
- All-Star Superman
Yes, it probably wasn’t a surprise because it really is the greatest Superman story ever told.
It’s written by Grant Morrison of all people.
The story centers around the day in the life of Superman and the difficulties he faces as well as the people he saves. It’s not action packed like the other stories we mentioned, but it’s extremely compelling.
Next week our top five will evaluate our picks for the top five Green Lanterns.
