The new teaser trailer for Star Wars Rogue One dropped yesterday and we are going to take an in depth look at this new chapter for the franchise.
Watch the trailer here and then we’ll dive in:
First Reactions
Seppin: I think that looks really good. I think it looks better than Force Awakens which I predicted. I only have one problem with this trailer. I don’t have anyone to relate to in this trailer.
Rek: I really enjoyed this trailer and I think it looks ten times better than The Force Awakens. I’m hyped to see more of the Death Star and more of Jyn in combat.
Let’s get to it!

Well, we have our main character Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) being led through the rebel base on Yavin 4. Her criminal background as a forgery of Imperial documents, possession of stolen property, aggravated assault, and resisting arrest is being read off to us.

Gonk Droid spotted! Our life is fulfilled.
Classic Star Wars at it’s finest. The helmets, the droids, the uniforms…great.

Perfect casting for Mon Mothma.
“On your own from the age of 15, reckless, aggressive, and undisciplined.”
Mon Mothma’s being a bit judgmental.

As Mon Mothma gives us the rest of the Erso backstory, Diego Luna’s as yet unnamed character looks on. Based on where he is and how he’s acting, we’re thinking he is a Rebel officer in good standing assigned to this mission. He’s got a very, Poe Dameron/Han Solo swagger about him.
We are going to throw this theory out there. We think this might be Captain Antilles. How do we know that name? He’s the guy that died at the beginning of Star Wars: A New Hope. We also know that he was the one to deliver the plans Princess Leia.
We have also heard that he is a completely new character called Cassein Willix. This is still a rumor so we cannot confirm that right now.

Erso holds her own against some Stormtroopers. It looks like it may be the planet Tatooine.

It’s kind of hard to tell, but it looks like Erso grabs Diego Luna’s character and brings him down to shield them from the explosion.

“We have a mission for you. A major weapons test is imminent. And we need to know what it is and how to destroy it,” says Mon Mothma.
“Is that clear?” says Alistair Petrie, who is playing yet another unnamed Rebel.

The Empire brought a ton of AT-ATs to this fight, and I’m pretty sure that Erso, Luna, and maybe Riz Ahmed are running from the lasers. We are going to get into where they are in a minute.

Cool shot of an Imperial ship as it goes by the Star Destroyer.

We all know what the weapon is and here we get to see the giant laser focus get installed on the Death Star which is awesome. The Star Destroyers at various levels in these shots give a hint of just how big this weaponized space station is to scale.

Ben Mendelsohn is listed as an Imperial Admiral. Seppin thinks without a doubt this is Tarkin. Tarkin was the architect behind the Death Star. He’s the guy who said in in Star Wars a New Hope, “You may fire when ready.”

Jiang Wen running with some sort of specially powered armor/weapon. All we know is that he is some kind of Rebel soldier, but we are going to assume he is going to be on Erso’s team.

Here is our first look at Forest Whitaker. His armor is much bulkier than we usually see in the Star Wars universe and he looks like he has a limp when he walks. Based on what we could find his character’s code name is, “Eel Leader,” which we think means he’s a bounty hunter. It would make sense, since he wasn’t in the photo of Erso’s team.

“What will you do if they catch you? What will they do if they break you?” Whitaker’s character continues over in this new scene. Donnie Yen appears to be wanted by the Empire. We think he is a badass space samurai. We’re assuming this is another member of the team.

Someone in a black cloak is kneeling in front of this chamber like feature. We think it is Darth Vadar’s personal space chamber. The red guards are the Emperor’s Royal Guards. We don’t see Emperor Palpatine as the kneeling type and certainly not in front of Vadar. So who could this be? And is this the person who will be the tie in for The Force Awakens? Snoak? But this would destroy the rule of two ( as far as Siths go). Maybe this is Vadar and he is chilling out before going into his chamber.

Here is a look at our team possibly going into battle.

Storm troopers walk through a city, probably before their fight with Erso from earlier in the trailer. The transport is interesting. It looks similar to the Clone trooper tanks.

A lot of the action in this trailer looks like it takes place on this tropical beach planet

Still no clue if it’s a Shadow Trooper or a Death Trooper, but there is something burning in background. Looks like moisture vaporators.

Here we see Mendelsohn. He appears to be surveying the damage after the battle on the beach planet. Lots of dead soldiers, but is that a burning X-wing in the background there?
Now we are going to discuss something here. It might be a spoiler so quit reading if you do not want to know.
You can see in the background to the right, a tall temple fashioned after a hut. We believe that they are on the Wookie planet Kashyyyk. The rebels are trying to recapture the planet and the Imperial army is determined not to let that happen. The core of the planet is full of oil and that’s why the Empire values it so much, but they decide to blow it up to get rid of the rebels and any random Wookie.
Chewbacca, as we know, is with Han. So he’s safe and about to meet Luke and Obi-Wan soon.

“What will you become?” as we see Erso in what certainly looks like a TIE pilot’s flight suit. We can assume she is on the Death Star.
Overall the teaser is great and we are very excited to see more. We love the idea of a Star Wars spy like movie. The story is reminiscent of one of the most popular stories, The Imperial Spy.
What do you guys think?
