Why I Am Excited For Wonder Woman ~A Short Essay by MamaSeppinRek

Have you seen this new poster for Wonder Woman? Did it give you chills like it did me? I must admit, I never thought I would ever have such a reaction to a character or movie before. Maybe it’s because I am immersed in comic book discussions every day with Seppin and Rek, but I think it goes much deeper than that.

I remember watching reruns of the Wonder Woman t.v. show with Lynda Carter when I was a little girl. I thought it was the most amazing show ever. I didn’t know much about comic books or superheroes, but I can tell you that seeing this strong woman onscreen was pretty darn cool to this girl from a small town in Maine.

I never gave it much thought as I got older though. That was until Seppin and Rek were born and reached the tender age of six. I think PapaSeppinRek and I thought their superhero fascination was a phase that they would grow out of in time.

How wrong we were…

When SeppinRek was started, my life changed as well. I joke that I am the world’s most underpaid secretary, but in truth, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I don’t claim to know as much as they do (especially Seppin), but I believe I am rather informed on comic book characters and story arcs.

Wonder Woman has always held a dear place in my heart and I still can feel the excitement I had sitting in Batman v Superman, waiting for her to appear. I never imagined I would have the reaction I did though when she came flying onto the screen and saved Batman, her theme music blaring, and a wave of feminine empowerment came over me. I still get goosebumps watching this scene.

Men and boys all over the world for decades have had Batman and Superman. Iron Man and Captain America. Spider-Man and The Flash. The list goes on and on, but us girls, we only had one and that was Wonder Woman. Of course, some would point out Black Widow (Who is technically not a superhero, she’s a spy) or even Scarlett Witch (Who I actually love, but still, she’s a mutant, not a superhero), but those woman weren’t prevalent when I was younger. If you ask any woman to name just one female superhero, I’m betting 9 out of 10 will say Wonder Woman.

She is the female superhero that transcends all generations.

The final trailer for Wonder Woman is going to come out today and I am once again left wondering if I will still cry like I have for the first two. I think it’s difficult for the younger generation, like Seppin and Rek, to fully understand the significance of this movie. As a woman in my early forties, I can tell you that I have seen a great many strides for feminism since I was young and I have also witnessed many setbacks in barbaric, small, mindless thinking that shockingly still happens in this day and age.

I have already seen people go out of their way to trash Gal Gadot and the character. Funny enough, by men who can’t seem to get past Gadot being an underwear model in her early days. How petty and how ridiculous. I’m sure half of Hollywood has dabbled in modelling at one time or another and I am also quite positive that, at some point they have been in crappy movies, but to go after a woman for being too beautiful is mind blowing to me.

Apparently, we are either damned if we do or damned if we don’t. When Gadot was appointed as a UN Ambassador, I cheered because I truly thought it sent a message that women should look up to this character that Gadot was playing and it would also further vacillate Gal Gadot’s journey to emulate this iconic figure.

But, of course, the back lash was immediate and Gadot was kicked out. Once again, the presence of a strong woman was being pulled back into the shadows by men who were intimidated. A travesty that didn’t seem to make the news as much as her appointment did, but Gadot handled it with grace and dignity.

Wonder Woman represents to me, a strong, female superhero, that strives to do good in this world. She doesn’t see gender, race, or religion. She only perceives good vs. evil and she will not stand by and watch as atrocities go on around here. She is a leader, but also gentle enough to be a kind mothering influence.

I know that there have been various takes on her character in comics, but that is the Wonder Woman I know and relate to in my mind. She’s not a saint by any means, but a beacon of hope and I think that is why this is such a relevant movie. I don’t know if it’s going to be any good or critically acclaimed. I don’t know if even half of the young women out there will understand what a big deal this is.

What I do know is, that I will be there for the first showing of Wonder Woman with my daughter and my sons. I will probably cry at some point and I hope to laugh as well. I also can already feel the goosebumps prickling underneath my skin at the very thought of her beating up bad guys and using her golden lasso.

Thank you DC for making this film. I know some haters have said that you should have done this years ago and there have been mysterious reports, who no one can cite any sources from, trashing the film and calling it a mess (??) but I think this is the perfect time and I know that I will be cheering on Diana of Themyscira as she takes on Mans World.

After all, she IS the first female superhero and she deserves respect.
