Hey everyone! It’s been a bit since we’ve posted, but we at SeppinRek are all super thankful for the support this year and hope to keep up with posting and introduce new content in the coming year! Now, to celebrate the New Year, we thought it would be a great idea for each of us to write up our top five favorite movies from this year. Obviously, this year has been met with unique challenges, both in the world and in the film industry, so it definitely makes for an interesting catalogue of releases.
So, let’s get started!
Seppin’s Top 5!
*Sadly, Seppin didn’t have time to explain his choices*
1. Dune

2. Zack Snyder’s Justice League

3. Spider-Man: No Way Home

4. The Suicide Squad

5. Army of the Dead

Rek’s Top 5!
1. Zack Snyder’s Justice League

I struggled to decide on the first and second spot on my list, but I have to give it to Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It is just a masterful epic that fully expands upon each character’s story beautifully in comparison to the theatrical release we received in 2017. Not to mention, we saw Darkseid! The movie deserves it’s first place.
2. Spider-Man: No Way Home

Again, I think its obvious why this film earned second place. It is an amazing (Amazing) embrace of Sony’s past Spider-Man films as well as matures Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. I wasn’t a big fan of the first two Holland Spider-Man films, but this one was spectacular.
3. Army of Thieves

I watched this a few weeks back and I regret not watching it sooner. The heists are all clever, the characters are unique, and the story of the average man doing something extraordinary works so well here. It is only a few notches above Army of the Dead for me, but it is an amazing extension of the world.
4. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf

I put this on my list, not for my love of The Witcher show, but I believe Vesemir’s story in this anime film is handled so well. It also has these lovely backdrops and fun, magical action that I wasn’t expecting.
5. Army of the Dead

I feel bad putting this movie down to my number 5, but there were some great movies that came out this year. Army of the Dead is the zombie movie which contains awesome action, stellar world building, and such a unique style that it was one of the highlights of 2021 for me.
MSR’s Top 5!
1. Zack Snyder’s Justice League

I went back and forth on this for a few days, but in the end, I chose ZSJL because I felt like we were on the journey to get this movie out of the proverbial shadows since the start. I had an emotional connection to Zack’s journey and watching his vision for the first time was magical. The nuances and completely different takes on each character were astounding. Not to mention some of the best cinematography ever. Period.
Warner Bros. should be ashamed of themselves for how the whole situation was handled. The greatness which was in your hands almost robbed us of this spectacular movie. We can only…hope that you’ll come to your senses and make it right.
2. Spider-Man No way Home

This was a close call. I loved No Way Home. I cheered, I cried, I had an out-of-body like experience watching this film. Seeing Charlie Cox (#savedaredevil) and then Andrew and then Tobey was…insane. Not to mention William Dafoe’s Green Goblin was a sight to behold once more. I also loved that Tom Holland has stepped out the MCU shadow and is now a proper, more mature, Spider-Man.
3. Dune

Dune was a love letter to fans and I enjoyed every second of this amazing sci-fi novel finally brought to life, properly, on the big screen. Every person was casted perfectly and I cannot wait for Part Two!
4. Shang-Chi

I am going to apologize right now. I don’t know why I wasn’t more excited for this movie, but when I watched it…wow. Absolutely loved it. This is one of my top five favorite Marvel movies. The fighting was so crisp and beautiful. The story, the characters…just perfect. I am eagerly anticipating a Shang-Chi 2!
5. Red Notice

I may get a little heat for this pick and, head scratching, but I thoroughly enjoyed Red Notice. Maybe because it was mindless fun, but the ending…! I did not see that twist and now I want more!
Thank you all again for a stellar year on the blog and hopefully you have all had a wonderful holiday season! Let us know what your top five films for this year are in the comments below!
Until next time…
